General dance DESCRIPTIONS:

INTRODUCTORY LEVELS

  • PRE-PRIMARY (3.5 through 5 years old)- This class will allow children to utilize their natural creative process to develop artistry, along with a strong emphasis on right and left, basic directions, and the relationship of the child to others in the class.
    *This class meets Thursdays 3-4pm.

  • Primary (Kindergarten & 1st grade) – A 1 hour combination class consisting of 40 mins Ballet and 20 mins Tap. Serves as preparation for our Classical Ballet Program and Level A classes.
    *This class meets Fridays 5-6pm.

TAP, JAZZ AND CONTEMPORARY

  • TAP (2nd grade and up) - Tap is a form of dance where rhythmic sounds are created by the feet. Classes emphasize the development and strengthening of basic tap technique and terminology highlighting the importance of rhythm and sound.
  • JAZZ (2nd grade and up) - A style of theatrical dancing conceived in America. Its technique derives from ballet and modern and is influenced by the musical styles of each succeeding decade. Classes teach basic jazz dance technique, terminology and movement quality with an emphasis on proper execution of jazz isolations, rhythms and style performed to contemporary music.
  • CONTEMPORARY (Ballet B and above)-Contemporary dance is a style of dance which emerged in the 20th century as an outgrowth of modern dance and other 20th century dance techniques. Defining this style of dance can be difficult, as contemporary dance is an extremely fluid and very nebulous style of dance. Unlike traditions such as ballet, contemporary dance is not associated with specific dance techniques, but rather with a dance philosophy. In contemporary dance, people attempt to explore the natural energy and emotions of their bodies to produce dances which are often very personal.

CLASSICAL BALLET PROGRAM

  • CLASSICAL BALLET - A classical form of dance based on traditional positions of the arms and feet. Classes consist of barre exercises, center work, adagio and allegro combinations. Physical maturation interacts with training to allow readiness for each level in ballet. Students should expect to spend more than one year at most levels. Teachers work to refine skills and build proper technique with more advanced students at each level. Ballet requires mental and physical discipline and repetition to train the muscles.
  • BALLET A- The first class in the traditional ballet format, beginning with work at the barre. The emphasis in this class is on positions of the feet and arms, vocabulary, body directions, and discipline in caring atmosphere.
    *This class meets Mondays 5-6pm.
  • BALLET B-This class will emphasize turnout and posture, introduce more steps, and give special attention to building strength for injury prevention. Knowledge of spoken and written ballet terms will be emphasized.
    *This level meets Tuesday 5-6:30.
  • BALLET B+- A more challenging class that will begin to focus on the intricacies of steps, while adding more complex combinations. Emphasis on flexibility, coordination, and accuracy. Pointe work is introduced at this level by teacher recommendation only.
*This level meets Tuesdays 5-6:30pm, Thursdays 5-6:30 and Thursday 6:30-7pm Pointe Technique.
  • BALLET C - These levels have a strong emphasis on performance quality, style, and showmanship, along with a deeper mastery of musicality. Beyond technique, students will study pointe work more intensively and will devote more time to learning traditional choreography of classical variations, as well as the history behind many of the most popular story ballets currently performed by professional companies.
*This level meets Monday 6-7:30pm,Thursdays 5-6:30 and Thursday 6:30-7:30 Pointe Technique.

Advancement by recommendation of instructor only.
